Behind the Art

Q: What's the story behind this series?

A: This project started over 10 years ago when I saved up money from teaching yoga to buy a billboard. I lost my father to suicide when I was 17 and ever since then I've been on a mission to create change with my art. I want everyone to know that they are enough, they are loved, and they are strong. I'm just a human from Kansas City who wanted to inspire others to keep going.

Q: What's next for this project?

A: I've always dreamed of taking affirmation billboards to Times Square. Los Angeles was a huge goal, now I'm excited to spread it even further. I just want this project to make an impact in our local community but also to reach around the world. My goal is to make these affirmations regular, and truths that people see and live every day.

Q: How did you start putting up so many billboards?

A: After I put up my very first billboard, it caught fire and gained attention internationally. The outdoor advertising company, Lamar, then contacted me and we came up with the PSA campaign. A series that spread these positive affirmations across the nation during the month of September (Suicide Prevention Month). Together for that affirmation project we actually won a bronze OBIE award.

Q: What do you like about this collaboration?

A: I love that these affirmations have been able to inspire so many people while in the air, but I think it's so amazing that they're coming down and you'll be able to hold the actual affirmations in your hands and carry that daily reminder with you wherever you go.

Who is Nicole Leth?

This is Nicole. She describes herself as 27 year old artist, writer, yoga teacher, and human being living in the Midwest. Here are a few words from her about this project:

"I'm trying to put words that matter into the world so people will remember that they matter, too. Sometimes this world makes me feel powerless and heartbroken, but this is my way of fighting back and trying to create compassionate change to help save the world from the inside out. This is my affirmation project."

Frequently Asked Questions:

What is the Artist Series?

We believe that creativity is a vital part of life and this series is a way to celebrate that. We search far and wide for artists, muralists, designers, and creatives who not only make beautiful pieces of art, but also inspire the communities around them. Each collection is crafted with purpose from start to finish, and support artists from across the country. Plus, you'll finally be able to know exactly which billboard your bag came from.

If you'd like to nominate a candidate for a future Artist Series, please send in your suggestions to info@rareform.com we'd love to see what art you want on your bags!

What's the deal with the billboard industry?

Here at Rareform, we fully support the billboard advertisers and those who use their services. We think the industry does an amazing job supporting and promoting businesses, small and large, across the world. Our goal is not to stop advertising companies from printing more billboards, we simply want to be the solution to their waste. Since the PVC material used for billboards cannot be traditionally recycled, our bags help to extend their lifespan by allowing the material to be reused in a completely new way.

Do you print billboards for this project?

Yes, we do print billboards for this project .

This project is about celebrating art and artists in our community. Billboards are a unique medium because their viewership is so high - they can make a huge impact and gain a lot more traction than other media forms. We're simply using the platform, resources, and connections we have to help promote an artist or message that we believe in. Every artist receives a percentage of sales and is featured by our brand.

Additionally, the billboards we do print for this project are nothing in comparison to the number we receive from existing advertisers. And they are still being repurposed into unique products, extending their lifespan by years.
