Our Process

How we do it

We recycle billboard vinyl and turn it into unique, durable bags and products. Over the past six years we've processed 2 million pounds of vinyl that's destined for landfills.

Source billboards

Billboards from all over the country

We collect bold billboard vinyls from all over the country - currently repurposing 50,000 lbs a month into one-of-a-kind products.

Sort & Clean

Not all billboards are created equal

We love typography, colors, and abstract designs. We aren't into faces, food or logos and our team has strict cutting guidelines. We wash and cut the vinyl in our Los Angeles headquarters, creating unique designs for every product.

Hand cut vinyl

Making the best of what we have

Each item is sewn to create a unique, high-quality, durable product where there's literally nothing like it. Each of our cut pieces are meticulously sewn together using high quality materials to ensure that your bag can endure whatever adventure you take it on.

Craft unique items

Ensuring we make every piece unique

Every product on our site is one-of-a-kind. That means when it sells, it's gone and we're off repurposing more billboards.

Ideal for under/grads and minimalists; may be tight for high schoolers and teachers

My parents gave me this backpack as the big Christmas gift. They'd seen that I'd been checking out Rareform backpacks for the past 6 months, and my dad had also seen me buy other Rareform products in the past like the Veer wallet for myself and the Madison wristlet for Mum's Christmas gift (she loved it!). Brooklyn is easily one of my favorite backpacks I've ever had. It's ideal for adults—particularly under/grad students like myself—who perform the bulk of their work or art on a laptop or paper notebook and don’t carry much else, but who prefer the look and weight of a traditional backpack over a briefcase or messenger bag. It’s also ideal if you want to slim down on the stuff you carry and be more minimalist. I can comfortably carry: - My MacBook Pro and any folders or paper documents in the laptop pouch - A book or planner in the main compartment (as I’m typing this I’m carrying “Prisoner of Azkaban”) - My MacBook and iPhone chargers, a pen and mini notebook, my iPhone, my Veer wallet, my keys, a lip balm and a mint tin in the front compartment - A hoodie or cardigan under the flap Any stuff beyond this and it becomes a tight fit. Billboard vinyl backpacks runs tighter and takes breaking in. I’d advise that high school students and teachers who have a lot of textbooks, notebooks, lesson plans or grading compare Rareform's larger backpacks like Brooklyn or Summit to backpacks from other companies like Cotopaxi or United By Blue, before they purchase, to make sure this backpack is a right fit. If I were designing Brooklyn, I would make a few changes as well: larger pockets in the front compartment so you don't have to break them in as long, and a flat bottom so that Brooklyn can stand without leaning against a wall or slipping. I enjoy practically everything else about Brooklyn. I get a lot of compliments on its colors and classic shape, and when I tell people about its ethical and environmental impact they're intrigued. I'd say that my favorite feature is the laptop zipper—if like me you frequently use your laptop/tablet or have loose paper documents and folders, this zipper lets you easily get to them without unbuckling the flap. This is a very convenient backpack that I see myself using years down the road.

Just Buy It!!

I’ve been on the hunt for a sustainable, roomy but not to big backpack for 6-8 months. Rareform was recommended to me through Instagram. So glad I found them! I am addicted!! I’m a public transit commuter so I needed to be able to tote a lot of things around. This backpack is perfect between being able to load it up and not being to large/bulky. UNBELIEVABLY light weight, straps are very comfortable. I get LOTS of compliments on it. Love the fact it’s one of a kind. I tell anyone who will listen about this brand. I am forever a loyal customer now.

Everyone loves it!

Got this backpack and all my friends think it’s so cool! Very well made and sturdy. Little less cargo space than I was anticipating and my laptop is too big to pull through the side zipper, but my laptop is also unnaturally large.
